One day I saw some artwork of a cross-section of a wishing well on Pinterest and that got me thinking. Who exactly grants the wishes? And where did the idea of a wishing well even come from?
Wishes, they come in all sizes, some as big as the moon, others as tiny as a pea. There are the wishes you whisper, and the wishes you shout from the rooftops. Then there are the wishes said in a moment of anger that you instantly want to take back.
The tiny town of Hope’s End sits at the tippity top of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula—otherwise known as Keweenaw Peninsula. However, Hope’s End is a fictional town. BUT it is inspired by the very real town of Calumet.
I never really thought about why we toss pennies in wishing wells or who exactly was supposed to grant our silent wishes. I knew you weren’t supposed to tell anyone about your wish, or else it wouldn’t come true. But that was as far as my knowledge went.
